This book takes the principles of how
to enhance learning, as established in many other books
in this series, one step further. It applies these principles
to staff, to staff development and finally to management
and leadership. It seeks out, and applies, a coherence
of approach to the whole learning community.
Furthermore it explains how the American
Critical Skills Programme incorporates all the key principles
of learning in a comprehensive, practical and outstandingly
effective teaching programme, which can also be used
to promote staff and organisational development.
We are holding conferences throughout
England and Scotland on the Critical Skills Programme.

About the Book
The main theme is that the effective
leadership of true Ślearning schoolsą involves applying
the principles of learning to all levels of educational
management. The book consists of four sections that
deal with:
- Learning - 13 key principles
of learning are derived from a survey of up-to-date
knowledge of the brain and learning.
- Teaching how to use the key
principles of learning to improve teachers' professional
knowledge and skills, make the learning environment
more supportive and improve the design of learning
activities. The text explains how the American Critical
Skills Programme incorporates all these key principles
of learning into a comprehensive, practical and outstandingly
effective teaching programme which also promotes effective
staff and organizational development.
- Staff Development how the
same principles that should underpin the design and
teaching of learning activities for pupils should
underpin the design and provision of development activities
for teachers.
- Organizational Development
how a learning school should be consciously managed
according to these same key principles of learning.
The section proposes a radical new 'whole brain' approach
to Development Planning.
The Critical Skills Programme
'Teaching materials and training
for this impressive teaching programme are available
in the United Kingdom through Network Educational Press.
The training was described by one Scottish teacher as
ŚA wonderful experience; the first in-service training
I have ever been on that I never wanted to stop'.
