Network Continuum Education was born as Network Educational Press (NEP) back in 1990 and owed its origins to developments in Resource Based Learning, Action Learning, Supported Self Study and Flexible Learning, which had flourished as educational banners in the previous decade. NEP adopted the central theme of student empowerment that had been a common thread through these earlier projects and established this as its core educational market both for publishing teacher books and student enquiry guides as well as a stream of courses and conferences on the same theme.
Much of the earlier work was very pragmatic and based on accredited classroom practice and success. However, in 1996, NEP began to introduce the research work of established educational thinkers such as Howard Gardner and David Perkins through practical teacher books on Accelerated Learning. The lead author here was Alistair Smith, quickly followed by Barry Teare, Stephen Bowkett, Chris Dickinson and Mike Hughes, all of whom helped NEP to establish a clear niche for well researched texts and training that really assisted classroom teachers to empower their students to become more autonomous and effective in their learning.
In December 2005, NEP was acquired by the Continuum International Publishing Group and continues to flourish under the banner of Network Continuum Education (NCE). NCE publishing actively promotes innovative approaches to teaching and learning and the best in forward-thinking classroom practice. With a backlist of over 200 education books from highly experienced and well-established education authors, specialists and practitioners such as: Sue Palmer, Ros Bayley, Campaign for Learning, Professor Tim Brighouse, Professor John West-Burnham, University of the First Age, Mike Fleetham and Barbara Prashnig.
